management resources and ideas has finally come together for a dedicated set of HIV/AIDS
Volunteer Managers throughout the Bay Area. In coming together, theyve produced a
VOLUNTEER GUIDE brochure that allows the individual to visually pick from a menu of
alternative volunteer options. Say for example, that after years of direct one-on-one
service to a client, you need a break - something like meal deliveries, or pet walking -
this brochure directs you to the proper contact. Making the life of the manager easier
because is helps bring new volunteers into the fold, helping the volunteer by making a
one-stop shop available. For more information - or a copy of the brochure - contact

warehouse this quarter. This brings to something like 3000, the number of glasses
weve collected and turned in this year alone. The Castro members able to attend this
quarters work day were GEH household members Lions Gardner, Ed, & Hector, Lions
Matt Hudson, Jan Sibley, Bond Shands and Carl Tebell. These 7 Lions worked a total of some
21 hours (that 3 each for the bean-counters) doing everything from sorting to cleaning to
packing to labeling for shipment. We also discovered - the here-to-fore unusable, they
weigh too much to ship - eye glass cases - now have a home as well. Community Thrift Store
is taking them - and was very glad to get them - we dropped off about 300 cases on
Saturday - so even at say $.50 each - we could be making some real money here! Thanks to
all these hard working Lions - remember - the next work day is Nov 14 - get it on your
calendar now. In the mean-time : Help collect glasses & cases Recruit new workers Tell
a Friend about the Eye Care Fund/United Way contribution options. Donate Used items to
Community Thrift - it too supports our eye care fund. Call Lions Gardner or Sams for
details. Some collection materials are available, pickups are available too if the
quantity is sufficient.
Another volunteer opportun-ity the members of the club had over the
weekend of May 8th was staffing one of the rest stops in the Project Inform fund raiser -
the Ron Wilmot Memorial Bike Ride. The event was nearly twice the success it was in 1997.
With seed money from the Castro Lions and other sources, the PI event came down to 42
riders going 7 miles each on the Day of the Event having raised some $74,000 - including a
match-ing grant gift from the BWB Trust. This is $30k+ more than last year and with an
administrative overhead of some 5-10% (including in-kinds) the event average for each
rider was $1,586.00 raised. These are great returns! We also had a hand in the dedication ceremonies in the Rikki Stryker/Colliningwood Park celebration on Mothers Day. Lion Michelle Jester tells us several members and their friends including Lions Matos, Hintermann, & Saeger stopped by throughout the day - by the way - the club garnered $100 for our efforts at the gate not to mention the presence in the community. Thanks to everyone that attended - especially those wearing vests! And speaking of vests, jackets and other club-logo items, Lions Sams, Gallup and Heimann have a variety of things for purchase by the membership. VESTS: Call 415-90-LIONS for yours! With less than two weeks left before the big event, there's only a few training dates left. I'm taking advantage of opportunities to log a few more miles as often as possible. Yesterday (Saturday) was the longest and most gruesome ride I've yet attempted. It's with a great sigh of relief that I report having finished in the front group of all on the ride (over 80 riders). The reason the event will remain memorable to me was that it represented my first "Century" ride (over 100 miles). However, it wasn't so much the distance which proved gruesome as the elevation. By the time I had returned home my wrist accumu-lative altimeter had recorded over 5400 feet of elevation gained during the course of the ride. In addition to my altimeter, my bike has a gadget which records other statistics about the ride. I've been logging that information into a book after each trip. Here are some of the statistics from my "Century" ride. Distance traveled - 112.6 miles Average Speed - 12.4 miles Total Ride Time - 9 hours and 3 minutes Maximum Speed - 37.0 mph Ride Start Time - 8:15 a.m. Ride Finish Time - 7:15 p.m. Total Stops and Breaks - 1 hour and 57 minutes There are more than a hundred of you who are sponsoring my ride with contributions to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. You've all been terribly generous and the total amount raised has far exceeded my expecta-tions. Together, your sponsorship contributions total more than $5,500. Thanks very, very much. I truly value your support. Bond FYI: California AIDS Ride 5 Presented By Tanqueray from
May 31st through June 6th covers a 560 mile route from Ft Mason SF to Century City in LA.
During kickoff weekend, over 600 volunteers will be needed to set up at Fort Mason on
Friday, May 29; to staff Day Zero on Saturday (processing riders, crew and equipment); and
to be part of the emotional Opening Ceremonies on Sunday, May 31st. It is not too late for
your sister, best friend, boss, or dentist to feel the adrenaline and share in the
excitement of this year's Ride. There are great assignments still available (heck, they're
all great assignments!). Interested volunteers should call Abby immediately at
